Apple has again made tweaks to its new Night Shift feature in iOS 9 beta 5, giving users more control and enhancing its functionality. But be warned: Night Shift no longer works when your iOS device enters Low Power Mode.
Night Shift, which made its debut in the first iOS 9.3 beta, filters out blue light to make our iPhones, iPads, and iPods healthier to use at night. Studies have shown that blue light disrupts our circadian rhythm, making it harder to fall asleep.
In earlier iOS 9.3 betas, Night Shift was just thrown into the Settings menu, but it’s gotten better with each release. The feature now has its own toggle inside Control Center, and users have more control over how it works.
Not only can you schedule Night Shift by time or by sunrise and sunset, but you can turn it on manually for use during the day should you want to. In beta 5, this is as easy as tapping the Night Shift toggle in Control Center once.
In previous releases, tapping the toggle would provide you with the option to enable Night Shift “for now,” and “until tomorrow.” You can still access the second option by visiting the Night Shift preferences inside the Settings app.
Apple has also disabled Night Shift when iOS enters Low Power Mode. Presumably, that means the feature burns more battery, but it’s a shame to have this restriction — after all, you’re likely to have a low battery at the end of the day when Night Shift is most useful.
There’s still time for that to change before iOS 9.3 makes its public debut in the coming weeks, of course, but for now, Night Shift simply won’t work in Low Power Mode at all, and there’s no option to override that.
Apple rolled out iOS 9.3 beta 5 on Tuesday. If you’re running a previous release, you can upgrade over-the-air from within the Settings app on your iOS device.
