When I was a kid, Final Fantasy was not subject to creating direct sequels to even its most popular games. Then, Final Fantasy X-2 came along and made the company bajillions of dollars, and this success led to nonsense like Final Fantasy XIII getting sequels.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years? Don’t get me started.
However, Final Fantasy XV is looking to, graciously mind you, avoid this trap. Director Hajime Tabata recently stated with Polygon that he would rather stick to his current vision and continue shoveling content onto a game that already exists.
If you do that full sequel model of expanding on an IP or a series, it’s good in certain ways. The negative of that is there’s a very large open period where you’re not releasing anything. In that period, you get people to move away, and their attachment to the franchise dissipates a little bit.
So far, Final Fantasy XV has been bombarded by a duo of episodes that shed more light on Noctis’ companions Gladio and Prompto. The last of these chapters focuses on his suave friend Ignis, and it will be released later this year.
And given that Final Fantasy XV is already absolutely ridiculous, I can imagine a lot more content coming in 2018 and beyond, hopefully leading us into an announcement for Final Fantasy XVI.

It’s hard to have a sequel to a popular game when absolutely every major character is killed. I mean, Final Fantasy X at least had most of the supporting cast still around, including the central female. Final Fantasy XV, though? Hajime Tabata and his writers were absolute butchers by the game’s conclusion, chopping away at Lady Lunafreya, Noctis, his friends, and his father.
Although, I wouldn’t mind playing a sequel that stars Cindy, with her cruising around the globe and gathering scrap for her garage. That’d be a lot of fun.
Final Fantasy XV’s Episode Ignis launches in December, and a PC version will launch in early 2018. Following those releases, we’ll have a better idea of Square Enix’s future plans for the game.
