iPhone was the best-selling tech product of 2017—and it wasn’t even close

The iPhone was as popular as ever in 2017, again becoming the best-selling product of the year.

Daniel Ives, an analyst for GBH Insights, procured a chart for USA Today that charts the best-selling products of 2017. Unsurprisingly, the iPhone handily took the top spot. What is surprising is the margin, outselling the bottom four products combined. Here’s how the list breaks down.

Apple deviated from its usual iPhone release cycle, releasing three new models instead of two. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus came out in September, followed by the iPhone X in November. This was buoyed by healthy sales of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus throughout the year.

There was only one other year Apple sold more iPhones, and that was in 2015 when the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 took the world by storm. Expect that to change in 2018. Daniel Ives expects Apple to sell 350 million iPhones next year as the iPhone X continues healthy sales along with the release of more iPhones.

In a distant second place was Samsung’s trio of flagships: Galaxy S8, S8 Plus and Note 8 with a solid 33 million devices sold. Rounding out the top five were the Amazon Echo Dot (24 million), Apple Watch (20 million) and Nintendo Switch (15 million).

The chart highlights the trends of 2017. Smartphones occupied the top two spots, but in third place was the Echo Dot as home assistant speakers became wildly popular. In fifth place was probably the gadget of the year with the Nintendo Switch. It became a bonafide hit with its portable gaming and fantastic software.
