LG and AT&T have had a friendly working relationship for many years now, resulting in AT&T nabbing some major LG exclusives, like the V30 and its newest incarnation as the V35. So, why doesn’t the carrier offer the G7? In an interview with Android Headlines, LG candidly revealed the reason why the G7 isn’t available through AT&T.
It’s the display’s fault.
According to LG, AT&T passed on the G7 because of the display and stated two specific issues it had with it. The first one was that it did not want the notch. Apparently, AT&T is not a big fan of the notch. It currently sells the iPhone X, which famously sports a notch, but given that it’s from Apple, we doubt AT&T’s opinion about the notch mattered in that situation.
With the G7, AT&T put its foot down. We’ve known of users’ dislike for the notch but this is the first time we’ve heard of a big company voicing their displeasure of the notch. It probably will have to get over it soon as every major flagship is adopting the notch. The lone holdouts right now are Samsung and Google, but if rumors are to be believed, the latter is going all in with the notch this year.
The second issue AT&T had with the G7’s display was that it was an LCD panel and not OLED like many other flagships, including the V30 it offered last year. The reason being is that it wants to heavily push its entertainment services, including DirecTV Now. That will obviously look much better on an OLED display than an LCD as it offers richer colors and true deep blacks.
AT&T also wasn’t a big fan of the taller 19.5:9 aspect ratio on the G7 compared to the 18:9 aspect ratio on the V30. We doubt the notch or the aspect ratio would have matter much to AT&T if the G7 had an OLED panel in the first place, but given that it didn’t, it nudged AT&T to ultimately pass on it much to LG’s chagrin.
